Weight Loss Surgery Support – A Vital Part of Your Plan

Posted on July 1, 2014 at 11:57 PM by Todd Eibes, MD

Weight Loss Surgery SupportWeight loss surgery support is not an optional part of bariatric surgery. It’s vital! Remember, weight loss surgery is not a cure for obesity, but rather a tool to help you lose weight to live a healthier, longer and more fulfilling life.

After your procedure, you’ll need to follow guidelines for diet, exercise and lifestyle changes… and you’ll need support in helping reach your goals.

Attendance at the Iowa Weight Loss Specialists' support group is crucial to your success and it’s free!

Support groups provide weight-loss surgery patients an opportunity to discuss issues they face before and after surgery. Most patients find that ongoing support helps them achieve the greatest long-term success.

The support groups usually occur the first Saturday of the month in the mornings.(get more information here). You will find that a great deal of information is presented during your meetings with this group to help you understand the steps you’ll need to take before and after your surgery to achieve the best possible weight loss outcome.

You are not alone any of this and talking to people who have gone through the very stage you’re in is incredibly helpful and reassuring. The group includes many patients at all stages of bariatric surgery, and it is very beneficial to hear other patients ask questions you may not have thought of or didn’t think to ask before or during the process.

This type of surgery affects not only you but the people in your life, including those who may have not been entirely supportive of your choice to pursue surgery. We encourage your family members and friends to attend the support group with you so that they can meet some of these other patients and ask questions.

Dr. Eibes and your weight loss surgery team are always at the group meetings to answer your questions and provide ongoing support. Michelle Gordon, our Bariatric Program Coordinator, will work with you and others in the group to schedule speakers and discussion on topics important to you.

Other topics may include:

  • Diet and healthy eating
  • Exercise and physical therapy
  • Psychiatric health (post bariatric surgery changes)
  • Anesthesia
  • Image and clothing consultants
  • Reconstructive surgery (Plastic surgeon)

Through your weight loss surgery support group and follow up care, our dedicated team of professionals will help guide you through your journey before, during and after your procedure. You will have good days, and you will have bad days. You will have to change the way you live your life to become the person that you want to be.

We will give you the tools to succeed and you’ll be joined by others who are sharing the same kinds of experiences. The small gains you make every day will lead to amazing changes in your life.

Our team at Iowa Weight Loss Specialists is here to do everything we can to help you succeed.
