As the popularity of weight loss medications (or GLP-1s) increases alongside the shortages of such medications, so does the availability of seemingly effective weight loss drugs that can be purchased online without a prescription. But, are they safe, and what are the risks involved?
While it may be tempting to consider an online business who advertises easy or no prescriptions for weight loss drugs, some of these internet programs conduct minimal medical evaluation. The “peptides” that one can purchase online without a prescription typically have a disclaimer in small print stating that they are “not for human use.”
When purchasing these products online, the buyer has to sign that they understand this product is for experimental use only. Unfortunately, by doing so, these online sellers are taking advantage of a vulnerable population by selling these highly questionable and unregulated products.
In addition, some companies are selling compounded products of poor quality as well. These types of medications should only be obtained by prescription from a medical provider and from a reputable pharmacy, whether in person or online/telehealth.
By contrast, there are some good-intentioned pharmacies trying to help bridge the gap due to a shortage of the name brand GLP-1 RAs (semaglutide, tirzepatide, for example). But are these compounded substances safe to use? Basically, if the product comes from an FDA registered 503B outsourcing facility following Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), then they most likely are safe for use by the patient. Patients should always ask their provider for validation that the product they are getting meets these 503B/cGMP standards
The best course of action is for patients to always work with a licensed physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant who is knowledgeable in managing these medications. Providers should be able to:
The good news is that the shortages of prescription medications are resolving. In addition, there are about 80 new medications currently going through clinical trials that are set to hit the market over the next 5 years. As new medications enter the market, the prices will most likely drop. Some of the existing weight loss medications will soon be available in generic form as well. There are numerous studies available that explore all of the great benefits these medications may offer. As more studies are published and prices drop, insurance plans and the general medical community will more readily support coverage and use of these medications.
