We are now beginning the holiday season and feeling like we’re on a continual holiday marathon through New Years. The holidays are a time to have fun and enjoy time with family and friends. There can be a lot of temptation with food, but remember it’s about the time spent with loved ones, not the food consumed.
We also add unnecessary stress to our lives during this season, trying to find presents, preparing for guests, attending parties, and more. When we get stressed we tend to revert back to bad habits, so during this holiday season remember to make yourself a priority. Make time in your schedule to exercise and continue to follow your meal plans. Don’t worry if you have a bad day (it happens to all of us). Do your best to get back on track.
Follow these tips for a healthy and happy holiday season:
1. Make time for yourself every day. Whether it’s 5, 10 or 20 minutes, everyone needs time to decompress or meditate to relax. A walk around the block or a nice bath with some favorite music can help keep you stress-free.
2. Exercise daily. Even if you can only get in 10-15 minutes, it will boost your energy and keep you focused. Try to continue with your regular exercise routine through the busy schedules and to keep it fun, think of things you can do as a family or with others (sledding, walking, biking, etc.).
3. Bring your own food. If you’re attending parties, bring a dish you know is healthy that you like to share. This way you won’t be caught off guard with unhealthy choices.
4. Attend support groups. Whether you attend one of our monthly support groups or an online group, stay connected with others to help keep yourself accountable and help each other out with tips and recommendations to get through any temptations.
