Starting Weight: 240 lbs.
Current Weight: 165 lbs.
What made you decide to have weight loss surgery? I wanted to be healthier and I had diabetes. My body and joints hurt all the time.
How long did it take for you to decide to have weight loss surgery? Years.
Did anyone either encourage or discourage you from having surgery? My best friend was going through the process and she encouraged me to check out the clinic.
What do you wish you'd known before the surgery? The clinic was very thorough and I did not feel at all unprepared going into the surgery.
What things are you able to do now that may have been difficult or impossible before surgery? After I was cleared to start working out, I immediately started to train for a half marathon. In the year 2021, I ran 2 half marathons. I also completed a Certified Personal Training course, a Group Cycling course, and I now lead several classes at our local gym. My husband and I also climbed the Manitou Incline which had 2,768 steps. I would not have considered doing a single one of these things before surgery.
Which conditions or diseases have you seen decrease or disappear since your surgery? Pre-surgery I was a Type 2 diabetic and relied on medication to regulate my blood sugar. Now, I am medication free and my diabetes is currently in remission.
How has surgery altered your outlook on life, your emotions, and/or relationships? This journey has really opened my eyes to how heavily I relied on food to control my mood and pacify my emotions.
Why did you decide to have surgery with Dr. Eibes? I had contemplated surgery for a few years with 240 pounds being my heaviest. I was able to lose and gain the same 10-20 pounds through diet and exercise but ultimately decided to seek medical help. My friend encouraged me to take the informational class with my husband. The class was so informative without being overwhelming, my husband not only thought it was a go for me but also for him.
What would you say about Dr. Eibes and his team? I can not say enough good things about this place. Dr. Eibes is direct, knowledgeable, and honest. Jon and Jody are both so caring and kind. The staff in hospital at Iowa Specialty Hospital in Belmond were friendly and attentive. They remembered my husband and I when we came back for my husband’s surgery. We had a few of the same nurses and it was very comforting.
What would you tell someone who is considering weight loss surgery? I would say that if you’re contemplating weight loss surgery, you should be in for the long haul. It is not a quick fix. It is a life long lifestyle change but with the exceptional team, it can be the best decision you could ever make. It has been for me!
