What Is Wegovy®?

A woman injects Wegovy® into her abdomen.

Wegovy® is an FDA-approved, once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist used for medical weight loss. It is approved for:

  • Adults with obesity, or adults who are overweight with a weight-related medical condition (like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes)
  • Adolescents 12 years and older with obesity
  • Adults with obesity or overweight and heart disease to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or cardiovascular death
  • Adults with MASH (metabolic dysfunction–associated steatohepatitis) with moderate to advanced liver scarring

Wegovy® is used along with:

  • A lower-calorie eating plan
  • Increased daily movement
  • Ongoing support from a medical weight-loss team

Wegovy® contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient found in Ozempic® and Rybelsus®. These medicines should not be used together.

How Does Wegovy® Work for Weight Loss?

Wegovy® helps you lose weight by acting like a natural hormone called GLP-1. This hormone helps regulate appetite, digestion, and blood sugar.

Wegovy® supports weight loss in three main ways:

1. Reduced Appetite

Wegovy® works in the part of the brain that controls hunger. It sends stronger “I’m full” signals, so you feel satisfied sooner and eat smaller portions.

2. Slower Stomach Emptying

Food stays in your stomach longer, which helps you feel full for longer after meals. This reduces snacking and overeating.

3. Better Blood Sugar and Insulin Response

Wegovy® improves how your body handles food by supporting steady blood sugar levels. For many people, this lowers cravings for high-sugar or high-fat foods.

Together, these effects lead to lower calorie intake, which is the key to losing weight.

How Much Weight Can You Lose with Wegovy®?

Weight loss is different for everyone, but studies show strong results:

  • People lose about 15% of their body weight on average over 68 weeks
  • That equals about 35 pounds for many adults
  • About 77% of people keep most of the weight off after two years
  • People who pair Wegovy® with coaching, meal planning, and regular activity often lose the most weight

At Iowa Weight Loss Specialists, we monitor your progress and adjust your plan to help you reach safe, meaningful results.

How Long Does It Take for Wegovy® to Start Working?

Many people notice:

  • Less hunger in the first week
  • Some weight loss in 2–4 weeks
  • Steady weight loss over several months

Your dose increases slowly to help your body adjust and reduce side effects.

You may qualify if:

  • Your BMI is 30 or higher, OR
  • Your BMI is 27 or higher, and you have a related health condition (high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, etc.)

You may also qualify if you have:

  • Heart disease and excess weight
